'Cause I've got issues with my sleep
but i'm wary of venturing out of manhattan. i'm afraid of getting stranded without all those yellow cabs. but he convinced me to come up and visit him and reassured me that it was a really safe area. and it is. too safe. as I was waiting for him on the corner I ducked into a convenient store to get ciggies and this guy that was coming out of the store jumped out of the way and held the door open for me and made a big show of "no after you"
then as i'm trying to light my cigarette outside this guy with a small suitcase comes up to me with his lighter. but then he bums one off me. and then starts telling me how he just got a job selling cruises but he hasn't sold any yet and because he only gets paid in commissions he hasn't been paid. and he was crashing at his girlfriend's place in staten island but her landlord made her throw him out. so this was really embarrassing for him but he's been sleeping in atm booths for the past few nights. so he's homeless and wants to know if i know of any place he could stay.
and along comes loic so i ask him if he knows of any places he could stay. but he doesn't. and i try to hint to him that maybe we should take him back to his or at least invite him to dinner. but he doesn't respond. so i give homeless guy a few more ciggies and bid him adieu. i felt bad because he looked so cold but loic said he was shivering on purpose to make us want to take him in.
so that's my impression of long island city. so nice even the homeless are attractive.
because loic made me go to long island city. i made him make me dinner. it was tres drole to watch because he didn't know what he was doing. we had gone to the supermarket and gotten ravioli, alfredo sauce and chicken. so all he had to do was heat and combine everything. but he decided to drench everything in truffle oil. which might have made it great. it was really yummy!

Oh academia, academia, academia
but first I want to share this paper I just wrote. So it was for Cultural Studies. which has been the coolest subject. all we do is watch youtube videos and discuss insanely interesting topics. ok so each week we had to write a short paper about anything we wanted. he gave us ideas but we could do whatever and most people just turned in rants. like the one i did about the security guards at my dorm. but then he assigned the final paper. where we decide what grade we should get and he guarantees to honor it. so basically we didn't have to go to class or turn in any papers at all because he will give us whatever grade we ask for. he said we could write: fuck you A and we would get an A
but i wrote this paper. which was immensely satisfying.
Why I should get an A
I should get an A. I don't even believe in A's. An A doesn't mean anything. It's all so subjective, an A does not have a fixed value. Obviously an A from Harvard is not the same as an A from some community college, but not in the way you might think. An A from Harvard is worth more in the eyes of employers and society but it's not necessarily worth more in terms of the student's work. According to USA Today, “the fact that 50% of all Harvard students now get A's is a troubling problem”.1
People pay a shitload of money to go to Harvard. And if your grades weren't good enough to get you into Harvard you are paying a fuckload in endowments to be there. So the last thing the university wants is for their students to leave. It goes both ways. Since the students pay so much they expect nothing less than A's. And the college wants the student to stay for as long as possible and to continue making contributions long after they leave so they make it as easy as possible to get A's.
Grade inflation isn't just confined to the Ivy Leagues. The same article states that: “fewer than 20% of all college students receive grades below a B-minus”. Make-up papers, exam re-does and contesting of grades are uniquely American things. It is uniquely American because there are very few countries, if any, where $40,000 per annum is the norm for college tuition. University is free in Russia, France, Denmark and practically free in other countries such as Australia where it's $4000 per annum but there is a government loan system whereby it's possible to never have to pay.
Americans are geared to think that more expensive means more valuable. In one of my classes, the professor asked if we would prefer free or cheaper university and only one person raised their hand. Of the people that didn't, one said they wouldn't want to pay less because than they would not care to be as motivated. Um, so they need to pay $40,000 in order to care? Couldn't they be just as committed paying $4000?
This is alarming. What's even more alarming is the extreme sense of self-entitlement that this brings. In another one of my classes, the professor asked us to grade ourselves but since we are paying a rather hefty fee to be there, he allowed people to ask to be graded by him. But then one student piqued: “Well, we are paying, so shouldn't we be able to decide our own grades”.
NOOOOO. We shouldn't be able to grade ourselves just because we pay $40,000 a year. That would be like buying grades, which is pretty much what we're doing now. Where grade inflation has made an A worthless. But still, we clamor for them. So in the spirit of assimilation: I am demanding an A because I paid for it.
And my ponytail now is really cute. It's never cute! it's usually pouffy or frizzy or blah but now it's cute!

And I want you to say Do you know what I'm saying?
saturday night ended up going to knitting factory. we wanted to see fan-tan after checking their myspace but we got there too late. we saw object who were really good. after that kinda zoned out the other bands that were playing cause we got talking to object and fan-tan. it was this girl's birthday and a cake was bought out for her. eventually i managed to score myself some but it was sooo gross. it was a vegan chocolate cake. got totally smashed on three drinks. i was drunk after one and a half. they are especially liberal with their drink pouring at kniting factory. object drove us home. but we craved maccas. so we hid for a long time not wanting them to see us sneaking off in the other direction. it was the BEST maccas EVER!!!!
tuesday raven asked if i wanted to go to home nightclub. and i'm like sure. what i didn't know was that she wasn't 21. and half way to this place she's like oh i forgot my fake id. and i'm like we should go back to get it. and she's like no i know people we'll be fine. um WE WEREN'T. so we tried some other places. then we went farther away to plumm which is owned by a whole host of celebrities including mr. big. and the bouncer was like i'll let you in if you go pay off that cop in the car who'll keep watch. and sure enough the cop comes over to us and goes: you have to do it on the sly put $20 bill behind your id and hand it to me. like OMG he was giving her step by step instructions. we didn't end up going in.
thursday was jenny's birthday dinner at buddha bar. ok so japanese in nyc is pretty expensive but i got ONE roll at buddha bar for $20. anyways our waiter was sooo cute and really nice. he kinda looked like aidan but younger, slimmer and cuter (i don't really think aidan's all that cute) so i wanted to pull a samantha but Buddha bar was giving me the shits cause there was no reception. and i was meant to meet up with les so i skipped out on cake. which i'm regretting now cause les stopped by, made me get him a sandwich and then was kicking me out of his car cause he had to get up early for a photo shoot in the morning. GAARR
friday caught up with pili and steph. went to the pub near stephs place. which has awesome food and awesome drinks but a TOTAL BITCH behind the bar. so the story is when stephy's bf was here they went to this place alot. and the bitch tried hitting on him..like eyefucking him and went so far to say "doesn't this song make you want to have sex" when your body is a wonderland came on. so we hate this bitch. and later in the night she wanted us to do these shots. but by then we've had several cocktails and couldnt drink anymore besides we hate her. but then when we asked if we could smoke she said "no because you didn't have my shots" like BITCH so we went up to the bar and had her freaking shots and she goes to steph, oh i know you, your boyfriend is hot.
saturday went out with stephy. checked out plumm which sucked! went to kingswood afterward which is owned by some australian boys. met steph's friend johno.
thursday heard from mor. we got lunch then wandered around wall st and south street seaport.
LAST NIGHT. stephy and i wanted to go out. went to the park for din din. and cocktails. i got a text from that french promoter telling me to come to nikki beach and he'll take care of me stephy really wanted to check it out so we went.
got to nikki beach and there's a MASSIVE line out front. stephy said to just text the promoter to come get us. i was a bit apprehensive since i didn't know his name and i wasn't sure if i would recognize him. but i did and it was fine. more than fine he took us straight in, bypassing the massive line we didn't even have to take out our ids.
so steph tells me his name is bruce. he's fucking crazy. once inside he's like darting everywhere. he gets champagne for us and he tells us that we must meet his "two best friends" who are two french dudes from miami now living in nyc. they're nice and a little while later we get a bottle and a table.
it was such a great night. got really happy drunk and danced a lot at the table and on the dance floor, which if you remember from before is this long runway thing. and people there are such exhibitionists. standing on speakers and gyrating.

By the way she looked I should've calmed down
so we're at the back of the plane and by the time food gets to us they're out of chicken and only have fish. to which the dude chucked a total fit, he's british so it was a lot of bloody hells, fucks and rattling of the chair in front. so that kinda broke the ice. and made me feel too bad to eat. so with no tv and no food we turned to drink. i guess we were rebelling. we had 4 or 5 white wines each, champagne, gin and vodka. on a empty stomach. and at very high altitudes.
we moved the drinking to the back of the plane. and severely pissed off several stewardesses by sitting on the emergency exit door. but we were having a cocktail party with w assistant, patrick lamenting about his german billionaire boyfriend who upon visiting him in paris said that he "missed missing him" and valerie the 18 yo, soul singing, new york au pair from amsterdam who kept saying that she would totally do patrick if he were straight. at one stage we were joined by the woman sitting in front of us who told me she couldn't believe she was speaking to me cause she saw me on the train in paris and thought i was so pretty i could be a model. it's so cool when you learn of a stranger's impression of you. it's reminds you that people are watching and judging all the time. then we were joined by marcelle a charming, old french man, a shoe designer who had on a pair of fabulous black patent oxfords.
alas it's a terrible mistake to drink so much on the plane. i was sick in the bathroom and only went back to my seat because we were landing. patrick returned shortly thereafter and we made a silent pact to act from now on that we did not know each other. valerie was talking and we were both ignoring her. well she was one person away from me so it was mainly patrick. the woman sitting behind us was complaining about us OBNOXIOUS people. i've never been called that. i mean we had NO TV lady.
when we finally landed patrick sprinted off and i hung around trying to distance myself. i think valerie was upset. customs was GRUESOME. sometime during the two hour wait i realized that i hadn't eaten for close to 20 hours and grew fearful that i would pass out. all visitors have to be interviewed and i had to be stuck behind this guy who's purpose to come to the us was to make "special hats". needless to say i was stuck for awhile.
when i finally got through and got my luggage this fucking nyu medical student grabbed my luggage off me and told me he'd drive me. one of those unaffiliated drivers who prey on people at the airport and charge you twice as fucking much. but i was too out of it to protest. he didn't know his way downtown and i was too weak to direct him so i just let him drive round and round. but finally got home. got rid of my stomach lining shoved a cracker in my mouth hopped into bed hoping i wouldn't die. and THAT was the most hellish night of my life.
anyways here are some photos from cph:

You've got your pleasures all around you They're all in a row
we were at the mexibar, which is a cute little place that has a whole lot of crap on the walls like moving deer heads. it was completely packed and everyone was having frozen strawberry magaritas so we had some too. but there was meant to be a snowstorm that night. there were weather warnings and much ado. so when the place closed at around 4 we were going to go to rust nightclub. but we couldn't breathe the air was so cold so we kinda panicked and went home. turned out the snowstorm wasn't so big a deal.
This was really yummy.

So lets take a ride and see whats mine
jp and his gf were also at the taping so we went to mcdonalds on broadway, which is my favourite. it reminds me of the one on george st. i called my roommate and she met us there even though she doesn't understand why i go to that one and not the one of fulton which is slightly closer. like the one on broadway is 2 minute walk whereas the one on fulton is a minute and a half away. jp called jeff. so we had an improptu gathering.
at the taping i met this little jewish girl named mor (pronounced more) which is funny because the other day i had met a guy named les (pronounced less). well I find it amusing. and i met up with both of them wednesday night. first i went to this jewish food fair at pace with mor. i tried everything there and all of it was really nice. met some other people cause we were all sitting on a big table. later les picked me up and we went to APT with some of his friends. i'd totally forgotten that there were people out there who drove. APT is in the meatpacking and like all good clubs it's hidden. from the front it looks like a slaughterhouse.
we were there from 12 - 2. which doesn't sound like a long time. but most places in manhattan end at 4 because people go out on weekdays and a lot have work at 7. but everything happens straight away in nyc. it's not like sydney where you go to a place and wait awhile for things to pick up. as soon as i walked in someone offered to buy me a drink which i decline. an old, extremely inebriated dane wanted me to smash his iphone because it wouldn't take a picture of his beautiful male companion in the dark. i got completely smashed, danced, talked to randoms, got offered a ticket to the playboy mansion, passed out on the couch and mistakenly took a bag that i thought was mine. and yeah left just after 2.
the next day hopped on a plane for copenhagen. stopped over at paris and felt a familiarity. guess my luggage felt the same because it got stranded in paris. i didn't get it back for two days. i finally got sick on the plane after days of breathing in my roommate's sickness. went out regardless.
paid for it the next day. slept the whole day. petra made me chicken soup for dinner. it was really good. then went for a stroll.
sunday. had a danish! went to arken. which is an art gallery in the middle of nowhere. saw some damien hirst and other artworks that i wish i could afford.

Cigarettes and songs, with a winter's chafe
anyways i was wary of this alex dude from the start so i asked him if he was a promoter. and he was. and he took raven and i to this table of guys. one of the dudes ordered a drink for me and i swear it was a tall glass of straight vodka. i take it upstairs after i've like sipped half of it and asked the manager if it was ethical for the bar to be serving tall glasses of straight vodka. and he's like probably not and mixes in some cranberry juice. which probably made it more drinkable but by that point i couldn't tell the difference.
there was a red carpet and an announcement when vicky was arriving. so we all lined the door and cheered when she came it. so my super sweet 16:

the birthday girl in a dress by life with bird. she was so excited that the designer was australian:

when we got back to lower manhattan. a whole bunch of us met up at gold st diner. which is my favorite diner cause they play indie music. and they don't care that i order thing that are not on the menu. anyways it was around 4.30 and the lights were off, only blue neons and there was a women at the next table by herself with a laptop, just working like it could have been any other time of the day.
saturday was vicky's actual birthday. we went out for dinner. she had a table booked at earth nyc for 10pm. but the day before it took everyone over 5 hours to get ready. and that night was no different. i think we may have gotten there just after 11. and by then the kitchen was closed. no one knew what was going on. ended up going to the place next door: the park. which was massive and really pretty with great food and a nightclub upstairs that was packed. but we didn't finish dinner till 3.30, really 4.30 cause it was daylight saving that night. i want to go back there because the place is lovely but it was annoying being there with 12 other girls and splitting the bill took a lifetime.

It's so much easier When sea foam green Is in fashion
sometime during the night, i was busy trying to get un-superglued from someone. my ring broke and i wanted some superglue to fix it. and nahuel got some for me.
and i think it was jay or someone else that was like that's a bad idea. and i'm all like that's an urban myth you can't get superglued to someone. but apparently you can. i was superglued to two people. but it was superficial with nahuel and we yanked apart but jay and i were really stuck. for i don't know how long. cause we spent quite awhile cracking up. some time scheming. and finally went to find some nail polish remover.

they were concerned that i'd be losing my nail polish. but that was the least of my worries. it's been over a week now and i still have chunks of skin missing from my fingers it's so gross. at first i couldn't remember why. and thought i had some skin disease. but then i remembered.

wednesday, random house, you know the world's largest book publishing company had an info session. and the ceo and a couple of other people talked to us. the ceo is so articulate and welcoming. i hope i grow up to be him. it was ok. it made me more aware of what i want to do. which is probably be an editor. or a literary agent.
the random house building is sooo pretty. and they gave out free books. and it was nice being in a new area. around 60th street. especially since i rarely venture above 14th.

You know you can't Rome without Caesar

anyways after cupcakes allie came over. we went downstairs to meet steph and made our way to pastis in the meatpacking district. we were met there shortly by jp and pili and their friends who are visiting from chile. it was the first time i had met them but they were super nice and very beautiful. they

bought me pressies as well. we had a few bottles of white for the table and several yummy cocktails. pastis is like a french bistro type restaurant and i had swordfish and RATATOUILLE.it was pretty good. but didn't transport me back through time or nothing. stephy bought me a cake it was really nice.
after dinner we wanted to go out.

but nothing seemed happening in the area. and it was the coldest night. anyways this guy came up to us and wanted us to go in his limo and he'd take us to a "party". and i had no idea what his agenda was and everyone was like it's your birthday, you decide. and it was so freezing so i'm like what the hell let's go. turns out it was like a taxi it was 5 bucks per person which was pretty cheap. since there was 8

of us. and it was pretty fun riding in a limo. so we were taken to marquee. the uber club that all the celebrities go too. NOT. omg the place was packed but the crowd was pretty bad. most of the clubs in NYC have table service. where you have to buy several bottles and you get a table for your party. so there were lots of moet bottles with sparklers

being brought to people. the music was awful like rnb stuff. but i had a good night. in a twisted sort of way. allie kept getting me shots of grey goose when i asked for it mixed with "sprite" oh you can't say lemonade here because they always say they don't have it cause they think you mean the homemade kind HAHAHA. and we were talking to a lot people who were all very old and very sad. like

this kiwi dude who was like come help me drink my bottles of vodka. because he probably only got in if he agreed to buy several bottles of it and now he has to find people to help him drink it. and while i was sitting there being nice, some man comes and sits next to me and starts shouting things in my ear. and i still couldn't hear because the music was so loud but i think i got the gist of it and it wasn't very nice. then he threw up like sitting right

next to me. i really had fun though with everyone that came. and south americans are so beautiful and friendly. and jp and his gf are adorable. they've been together for 6 years but they're still so in love. it was really great being around them cause you could really feel the love.

GITAR GITAR GITAR GITAR Come to my boudoir

sunday allie drove me back to new york. went to soho. maroon 5 were in the area playing a free show at the apple store. but we couldn't stay to watch. there were heaps of people screaming. but people are always going crazy in soho. the other day there was this massive queue going around the block just to buy this toy.
tuesday was the second ed2010 meeting. liz who goes to pace was talking to us. she's only 19 and she freelances for the washington post and usa today and she has a book coming out. it's so incredible. and all she did was email this writer she liked and asked her out for coffee. and then that writer introduced liz to her agent and they were like ok let's write this book.
despite being totally miserable about my birthday it wasn't too bad. as i was getting ready to go out my RA vicky and raven and her friend came around with cupcakes!!

Dancin’ on the legs of a newborn pony
it was pretty dead thurdays night there. no one at the door so we just walked in. the bartender remembered jp and pili from last week but wanted steph and my id. so we couldn't stay. but he was really nice about it. gave us some free tequila shots for the road and told us to go to another place around the corner that would be more lenient.
this other place was empty. but soon after us other people came in. but it didn't matter cause the bartender dave was THE nicest person. he made really yummy mojitos and gave us free apple-tini shots. much to the delight of pili who's a scrubs fanatic. AND he let us smoke! the bar was really cute with a couple of connect four games set up. we got really drunk and starting dancing on the bar stools and counter. don't know how i didn't fall and break my neck. but then suddenly it was 4 and we had to leave.

me with straight hair.

I asked your name You asked the time
the band we went to see weren't that great. they were like heavy, thrash metal. so we wandered upstairs to another stage and some jazzy band were playing that were kinda cool.
we came back down and had last call at the bar. then the djs, or rather, some kids with ipods were playing songs. velvet underground came on for a bit can't remember what song but it was quickly taken off. so i went over and said what the hell. asked if they could play any bands from australia. he said no cause all the kids wear fluoro. and i'm like you're right and did what the wombats say to do and asked for joy division. temptation was played instead. got talking to some band who were on earlier but we missed them cause we arrived late. then we were outside. helping to load the band's van. and i was trying to explain to someone that we weren't groupies when the lead singer came and hugged us. it was a really cool place. but it kinda made me sad. because it would've been the kinda place i would be at in sydney. just a bit too close to home.
i joined a club at college. it's basically for wannabe editors. it's really cool you get all these contacts for internships and get to meet editors at soirees and they come talk to us.got my free disposable camera photos back.
that's my roommate jess and some kid.
some people from pace.
chinatown
on chinese new years day
no fireworks. just lots of paper
some of the poppers had fortunes in them and people went nuts trying to catch them.
allie got one
